The Growing Importance Of Greening The Environment

A growing number of consumers in the developed world are increasingly interested in greening the environment. The idea that there is an organic connection to the way we live and eat has spread to other countries, particularly those in the Third World. This is not a new concept, but it is gaining increasing attention in the developed world as people become more aware of their carbon footprint and the damage being done to our planet. With the recent financial crisis encouraging consumers to look for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, the trend toward greening the environment is fast becoming popular in developed nations like the US. The emergence of green consumerism is partly due to the public’s increasing concern about climate change.

Greening The Environment

Many organizations that promote greening the environment work on projects in developing countries, aiming to improve agricultural productivity, create green spaces and reduce water and energy consumption in the cities and towns where they operate. These projects aim at building better farming systems by improving soil management, increasing crop production, and reducing food miles. Some implement principles similar to those advocated by the organic movement in the belief that people can consume organically and remain healthy while working to save the earth. A recent report by the World Wildlife Fund and the UN Environment Programme outlines some of the greening work that is being carried out and how these projects can be scaled up around the globe.

One of the areas in which many developing countries are working is greening the government buildings. Many governments are concerned about air quality, with many arguing that there is an increased risk of respiratory problems as the pollution levels continue to increase. Governments are increasingly trying to get their public buildings to run more efficiently, using less energy and using materials that have a lower impact on the environment. One method that is being used is vertical greening, where the design of the facility itself is changed to improve air quality.

A path with grass and trees

Trees are one of the most obvious places to plant trees, and indeed this is the traditional method of greening the environment. However, in order to plant trees effectively, they need to be kept in good health, and the way they are pruned or otherwise dealt with during their growing stages needs to be carefully considered. With a focus on plant life within the greening policy framework, this work can include tree management, pruning, pest control, and other aspects of plant life management.

In terms of pests, another area of attention focuses on the prevention of infestations and control. One of the issues in developing countries is how to deal with pests that are resistant to chemicals. This is where a greening master plan can come in handy. In the UK, several companies, such as the University of Forest Research (UK), have been working on developing pest control techniques, often based on greening work that has been in place for several decades.

Things To Consider

Greening the environment also works in terms of post-16 education. In other words, efforts to protect nature and promote sustainable development should extend into post-secondary education in order to give young people a solid grounding in greening work. Such post-secondary courses would offer coursework in sustainable architecture, green design, plant sciences, community eco-system management, and so on.

A major part of greening work has been done through government buildings – particularly government offices – as well as public gardens and parks. In the UK, several government buildings have taken on the initiative of turning their buildings green by installing roof greening panels and solar panels as well as employing people who live on the property to do the cleaning and maintenance. There are also several state parks in the UK that have embraced greening master plans, requiring staff to be trained in order to keep the parks green. In the USA, the Mall of America greened its entire property to the point that it now allows shoppers to buy green products and sustainable clothing.

Summing Up

Finally, there are green consumers as well as public institutions who have adopted such practices. Such examples include hotels in several US cities that have adopted solutions like implementing energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs or saving energy by installing low-wastage heaters. Green consumers are also increasing, as are those who opt for environmentally friendly products and services and are becoming increasingly aware of issues like global warming and climate change. This increase in awareness is helping to make greening the environment not only feasible but attractive as well.
