Overpopulation and Environment – Some Issues

A crowded city street surrounded by tall buildings

Major environmental issues affecting our planet are global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, climate change, geologically induced changes, ocean acidification, depletion of the ozone layer, habitat changes, overuse of natural polluting agents, depletion of the earth’s non-renewable resources, poaching and wildlife trafficking, air, land and water pollution, pollination, fishing, hunting and wild food cultivation, occupational safety and health, toxic chemicals, noise and occupational exposure to harmful substances. These environmental issues will lead to the eventual destruction of the earth’s non-renewable resources and lead to disastrous consequences for humanity, nature and living standards of all the people on earth. Thus, these environmental issues should be tackled with an urgent and coordinated approach through the use of all relevant civil and socio-economic tools and strategies.

 Climate Change

One of the major environmental issues facing mankind today is climate change. Recent studies have shown that there has been an alarming increase in global temperature over the last century. Evidence has been found in ice cores, which prove that the earth has warmed up by up to minus 0.12C during the Holocene era, a stage which lasted for about 10 million years. The evidence indicates that the Earth’s temperatures increased dramatically during the Pliocene era, which was brief in comparison to the present day. The warming of the earth has caused severe problems like drought, famine and flooding in many areas.

Ocean acidification is another major environmental issues which has recently caught people’s attention. Ocean acidification is due to the high levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. The acid produced by the increase in the atmospheric concentration of CO2 affects the mineral contents, organisms and plants in the aquatic system. This results in a reduction in natural productivity, causes drastic depletion of oxygen, and leads to the death of fish, plants and animals. Acid rain is one more result of ocean acidification.

Air Pollution

Another major environmental issue which has garnered widespread attention across the world is air pollution. Studies have indicated that there has been an alarming increase in the number of air contaminants in the atmosphere such as ozone, sulfur and others. Air pollution is a leading cause of death and damage to the environment by environmental performance.

 Another Major Environmental Issue

Carbon dioxide is another major environmental issue which is believed to be the result of increased atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide. There are many indications that show that this problem could get worse if not addressed soon. One of the consequences of this is global warming. A rise in the surface temperature of the earth greatly affects plant and animal life, in turn affecting human health and welfare. Global warming has been widely considered as one of the most important environmental issues confronting mankind today.

Final Words

In addition to global warming, another result of overpopulation is air pollution. Pollution caused by overpopulation is believed to have contributed largely to the poor health conditions which are common to many parts of the world today. This has been a hot topic of discussion. There have been articles related to the effect of overpopulation on health conditions all over the world. Some people believe that increasing the human population will solve these issues. Other people think that we can solve these problems through more education and creation of more green cities.
