When the habitat of a particular species is destroyed or on the verge of destruction, it is called habitat destruction. Division of habitats causes environmental issues. Divisions can take away the source of food from species and also their place to live. Such destruction might take place due to different reasons and can happen both in the water and land. Talking about water, construction of dams or any other concrete infrastructure can hamper the habitat of water species. Deforestation affect the animals living in the forest. In short, habitat destruction is a major issue that is arising and increasing every day.
Another reason that leads to habitat degradation is pollution. Human desires and needs are increasing day by day. And to fulfill these needs, we are polluting our surroundings. Pollution degrades the purity of air, water, and land and makes it toxic.
Reasons Behind Habitat Degradation
There are different reasons which cause habitat destruction and ultimately causing negative to the environment.
The world of agriculture is growing at a fast pace. Today, the number of families and people dependent on agriculture are much more than the early days. Due to more dependency, there is an increase in the demand for production, which requires extra land for cultivation. People are clearing a vast amount of land. These lands were earlier a habitat for many animals.
Humans are also clearing out lands to build big buildings and thus affect the habitat. People are busy in fulfilling their demands and needs. And in this course, we are neglecting the damage caused to the environment. Habitats are also cleared out to make buildings for businesses of large corporations. Places, where many of the large corporate buildings stand, were once home to many animals. Pollution of water is also destroying the habitat of aquatic animals. Since pollution makes the water bodies impure and toxic, which causes death to species living in the water. Soil pollution also affects the habitat of land-living organisms. The soil is becoming toxic due to the usage of different chemicals and pesticides in farming.
Results Of Habitat Destruction
One of the major impacts of habitat destruction is the extinction of species and why animals are endangered. Animals don’t feel safe and protected without their original habitat. They also have to struggle a lot to find their food.
Habitat degradation also disturbs the ecological balance. Balance between different species and the environment is important. Disturbing the balance means the species will find difficulty in adapting themselves to the new environment. This leads to the inability of organisms to reproduce.
We, humans, are the main reason behind global problems like global warming and climate change. Thus, majorly impacting the climatic condition of the planet. Such changes in the climate are the reason behind the unexpected increase of temperature, rise in sea level, and melting of the snow, which is a habitat for species like polar bears and penguins.
