Humans have done many great things. From developing technology to modern medicine, we truly are a great civilisation. However, while developing and making such strides as mankind we have also failed mother earth. In our desire to get rich, make advancements and such we have forgotten about the very place we live in earth. Ecological Restoration should be our top priority right now.
Over time, we have degraded our environment and have done nothing but have an adverse impact on the environment. From global warming to climate change — we are responsible for it all. However, it is not too late. Now is the time for serious environmental protection so that earth can live; so that we can live. It is the time that we take enough steps for proper ecological restoration.
Why Is Ecological Restoration So Important
Our fate as a species depends heavily on the state of our most important habitat… the land. Not only is our future as species intertwined to the survival of land ecosystems but land and forests are an essential foundation for any other sustainable development.
This is really important as restoring the environment is not only our ethical duty but, both, humans and animals heavily depend on terrestrial land too… economically and socially. Plants are the foundation of all mankind, they produce oxygen and the food we eat. Moreover, the main protection against climate change.
Despite that, due to our uncaring attitude 3.6 million hectares of forestry are destroyed every year, while a shocking 68% of plants and 12% of bird species are threatened to go extinct. This is devastating not only to the animals but humans too. Currently, 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihood while 2.6 billion people depend on agriculture for their livelihoods too. It’s estimated up to 2 billion people would be out of means to earn their livelihoods should this land degradation continue. Life on land is really crucial to us economically too…the value of eco-systems to a human’s lively hood is $125 trillion annually.
What Does EEcological Restoration Do?
Ecological Restoration aims to conserve and restore the use of terrestrial ecosystems such as forests, wetlands and drylands. This goal calls to halt the degradation of not only the natural habitat but the biodiversity too. This is aimed to achieve through halting deforestation and unprecedented land degradation, end the poaching and trafficking of animals.
How Does Ecological Restoration Help Us At The Same Time?
We are heavily dependant on the ecosystem environmentally speaking too, Over 80% of the human’s diet is provided by plants, providing 60% of the human’s energy. Moreover, forestry coverers 30% of the earth’s surface, providing security, protection and a cover against climate change. More than 80% of all terrestrial animals depend on forests while 80% of people living in rural areas in developing countries depend on them for medicine and health care. Nature-based solutions have contributed to a net 33% CO2 reduction. We also depend on mountains for 60-80% of all drinking water.
To summarise, flourishing life on land is the foundation for our life on this planet. We are all part of the planet’s ecosystem and we have caused detrimental damage to it through deforestation, loss of natural habitats and land degradation. Therefore, Promoting sustainable use of our ecosystems and preserving biodiversity is the key to sustainable development and survival.
